L’Artisan Parfumeur: Naturally French Scents

Chemist Jean Laporte was asked to create a banana perfume to be worn with a banana costume at a ball at the cabaret Folies Bergères. He was intrigued by the process of using entirely natural scents to create perfumes, so once the banana one was completed, he created a grapefruit scent, then a vanilla one. Thus L’Artisan Parfumeur was born.

Using natural scents and essential oils, Laporte created some of the brand’s most iconic fragrances- L’Eau d’Ambre, Chasse aux Papillons, and Premier Figuier among them. In 1979 he opened the first Artisan Parfumeur boutique on rue de Grenelle in Paris. Staying true to his chemist background, the bottles are designed to look like apothecary bottles.
